MEET THE BOXER

History and Origin of the Boxer

The Boxer breed developed in feudal Germany. Having a mastiff-type head and undershot bite, the Boxer was able to secure a hold on bulls, boars or bears. Being this, they were used as hunting dogs, being courageous and strong. The Boxer's descendents were bred to a taller, English import in the 1880's, developing what we know as the modern Boxer of today. It wasn't until the late 1930's that the Boxer's popularity grew. Being tall, gorgeous and smart, the Boxer won four "Best in Show" awards at Westminister Kennel Club between 1947 and 1970.

Breed Characteristics

The Boxer's most noticable characteristic is his need for human affection. Being high spirited, energetic and loyal, the Boxer makes for a great companion! The Boxer's keenest sense is hearing, he is always alert and makes for a great guard dog. It is simple for the Boxer to judge between friend and intruder. The Boxer is a proud dog, judging by his proud trot and the way he holds his head a tail high. The one characteristic that makes the Boxer so unique is his facial expression. Almost having a cartoon appearance, you can always tell what he is thinking just by looking at his face and into his dark, soulful eyes.

Caring For The Boxer

The Boxer is a high energy dog. He needs excercise and LOVES to run! Taking him for leashed walks or letting him run in a fenced area is one of his favourite past-times, besides cuddling with you that is! As the Boxer has very short fur, he needs very little grooming. But do keep in mind, that because he does have very short fur, he should NOT be left out in extreme temperatures for long periods of time. The Boxer's nails are very thick and grow quickly. Remember to trim the nails regularly and PROPERLY! Purchase proper nail trimmers to do it at home and start at an early age so it is an easy, enjoyable thing for him and you, as he gets older. If you are uncomfortable doing so, take him to a groomer and have them do it. Again, the Boxer has very little that needs to be done with grooming, but an ocassional bath is nice, although the Boxer has a tendency to keep himself clean. Remember to not over bathe him! The Boxer has natural oils that he needs and over bathing can dry his skin out and make him very uncomfortable and itchy!

An Interesting Fact : Germans named the Boxer the first breed capable of police training!
